Video Poker Rules and History

Video Poker is among the more recent challengers for the casino game throne, but it has rapidly skyrocketed to the cutting edge of casino gambling.  Online video poker is also popular at major internet casinos.

Video Poker first appeared in the 1970’s in a crude form, not quite ready for prime time play.  During the 1980’s, Video Poker caught fire among casino players and established its own reputation along with the other classic casino games.

Video Poker is a computerized, one-player version of Five Card Draw poker.  The game is an extremely amusing, simplified alternative to regular poker.  A computer booth, similar to a slot machine, houses the Video Poker game.

The player starts the game with cash, tokens or paper tickets.  The machine translates the payment into "credits" and players use their credits to place bets.

The machine then deals a five-card poker hand from a virtual deck.  The hand shows up on the screen as cards with big fonts.  From there player has the chance to switch any of his cards for new ones from the same deck.  After the machine swaps the cards, the software determines the value of the hand.

Video Poker machines disburse winnings based on precise pay tables displayed on the machine or on the casino websites.  These payouts commonly start with a pair of jacks as the lowest winning hand; any hand worse than jacks does not pay out.  The better the hand, the better the payout.

Occasionally, Video Poker games will have a “progressive jackpot”, or a jackpot that increases after every play instead of paying off at the same rate the every time.  Progressive jackpots are commonly set aside for the highest hands, including the Royal Flush.

Some players are against any type of computerized gambling machine.  They may be concerned that the machine "doesn't play fair". The response to that concern is that Video Poker machines are often programmed according to strict regulations.  Government bodies in charge of local gambling laws guard against cheating.

Even so, no single global set of criteria exists for gambling regulation.  Each location may have different regulations, providing varying degrees of freedom for cheating on both sides of the casino: the employees and the players.  Still, hacking a Video Poker machine is extremely difficult due to both the rugged structure of most machines and the tight security measures in use at most casinos.

Video Poker is a fun choice for most players.  However, before you sit down to play a Video Poker machine, make certain it’s the right game for you.

Many new players feel that the computer screen is a far less intimidating environment than the conventional poker game played around a table against other, more experienced players.  However, the game doesn’t leave much room to employ sophisticated strategies.  Most Video Poker machines use an elementary five-card draw game.  The only choices the player has are the size of the bet and the cards to keep or discard.

With only one round to improve a hand, an experienced poker player could be dismayed to find out just how rapidly he has lost his hand and his money.
